Avoid These 5 First Dance Music Fails

Avoid These 5 First Dance Music Fails

Your First Dance *should* be the talk of the evening, the year, even the decade if you pull it off. And it’s easier to accomplish when you avoid a few classic dance fails.

  1. Your song is too long.

An on-point First Dance song should last about 3 minutes (3 and a half minutes at most.) At this length, you’ll get plenty of time to build interest, emotion, and impress your guests with your jaw-dropping moves, but you’ll finish before they get bored. 3 minutes is ALL the time you need to build a bubbly party vibe that gives you memories galore while priming the floor for some serious shenanigans all night long.

  2. Watch those lyrics!

If you’re not comfortable with Grandma Marge and Uncle Leo listening in on your favorite uncensored swear-fest, it’s probably not the best song choice–even if the tune gets you so pumped you can practically touch the sky.

It’s better to choose a song the whole family can listen to. Keep your lyrics PG when possible, especially if there are kiddos present at your reception.

Pro tip: you may be able to find an all-ages radio edit of your song when you search on popular streaming platforms like Spotify and others.

  3. Your song choice is, um….a little too “out there.”

The best songs are the ones others relate to as much as you do. Though it’s totally fine to choose a song that has meaning and relevance for you and your Honey, avoid getting too fringey with the style or recognizability.

Save the death metal, avante garde, and sob rock for another party if possible. Instead, keep your First Dance Song to something that lets your guests tap their toes just as much as it lifts up your love and sense of fun.

  4. Your song is not “danceable.”

As you choreograph your dance, you want to feel confident and carefree. It’s wise to choose a song with clear segmentation and recognizable landmarks, so that you’ll know which move goes where–and in rhythm!

Songs that have easy-to-hear verses and choruses will help you stay on track with your moves. You’ll be able to focus more on what you’re doing and how you’re moving rather than counting out your steps. Choose a song you know well and gives you the cues you need just by listening. Then, your smile will tell the story of your love and excitement during your spotlight moment!

  5. You forgot to get a “practice” recording of your live band or vocalist performing your song.

While live music is SO SPECIAL, it adds a very human element of variability that can impact your song speed and style. It’s imperative that you communicate with your musicians that you are taking dance lessons and need the tempo/style of the song to be consistent on your big day. No surprises needed on your big day, thank you very much!
